La conférence de presse durera 90 minutes et le ministre sera à disposition pour répondre à vos questions. Après des études de mathématiques, génie aéronautique et économique, M. Josep Borell enseigna pendant 10 ans à l’université Complutense de Madrid. Il entre au gouvernement espagnol en 1982 et tenu plusieurs postes (Secrétaire général pour le Budget (1982-1984), Vice-Ministre du Trésor (1984-1991) et Ministre de Travaux publics, Télécommunications, Transport et l'Environnement (1991-1996)). Comme député au parlement espagnol pour Barcelone de 1986 à 2003, il a présidé la commission mixte des affaires européennes, et a été membre de la convention européenne (1999-2002) qui a préparé le projet de Constitution européenne. Élu au Parlement européen lors des élections de 2004. Au cours de la première moitié de la législature 2004-2009, il a été président du Parlement Européen et au cours de la seconde moitié, président de la Commission d’aide au Développement. Il a été présidente de l’Assemblée Parlementaire Euro-méditerranéenne et coprésident de l’Assemblée Parlementaire Euro-latino-américaine. De 2010 à 2012, il a été président de l’Institut universitaire européen de Florence. De 2013 à 2017, est retourné à l’enseignement, comme professeur, à la faculté d’économie de l’Université  Complutense de Madrid, et a été nommé à la Chaire « Jean Monnet » en intégration économique européenne. The International Labour Organization (ILO), the Permanent Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, the Permanent Delegation of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, the World Council of Churches, the Caritas in Veritate Foundation, and the Project “The future of work, labour after Laudato Si” are organizing a Special Event in the context of the commemoration of the Centenary of the ILO on the following theme: “Rethinking Labour and the Future of Work - an Interreligious Perspective”.

Date and Venue

The event will take place on Monday 25th February 2019, from 2 -5 pm at the premises of the ILO in Room XI (Entrance Door 4, R2 – South) in Geneva.

Context

2019 will mark the Centenary of the ILO, whose Constitution states that “whereas universal and lasting peace can be established only if it is based upon social justice [...] and whereas conditions of labour exist involving such injustice, hardship and privation to large number of people as to produce unrest so great that the peace and harmony of the world are imperiled”.1 In the run up to the 100 years, seven “Centenary Initiatives” have been introduced aimed at addressing the challenges of its social justice mandate in the future. One of these is “The Future of Work Initiative.”

The future of work is one of the biggest challenges of our century and an important topic for all religious convictions. Currently, there is a fundamental change underway, which requires in-depth reconsideration of what labour is and what it means for the economy, society, policy-making, individual and collective decision-makers and the human being in general. Labour should mean participating and contributing to an inclusive society. We are now living in the age of sustainable development, the basic idea of which posits that it is no longer sufficient to measure human progress in terms of economic growth

and the accumulation of material wealth. True development must rest on three legs: economic development, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.

Goals and Aims

“New forces are transforming the world of work. The transitions involved call for decisive action”2. This interreligious event therefore proposes a human centered agenda for the future of work. Religious traditions have been engaged for long in the reflection on the future of our humanity, placing human dignity at the center of their preoccupation, based on the firm conviction that humans have the responsibility and the capacity to decide on a future for all, based on discernment for the common good. The event, which is going to be divided into two panels, will allow the faith traditions to bring their convictions and visions forward as well as provide illustration of their concrete commitment in favour of the dignity of work and of the workers.

English / Français 70 Years of Reporting the World from the UN in Geneva  ACANU marks 70 years of supporting UN-accredited journalists  Anniversary celebrations in February with large-scale exhibit at the Palais des Nations and awards ceremony for the first-ever ACANU Prizes  GENEVA, Switzerland -- February 7, 2019: When the Geneva Association of United Nations Correspondents (ACANU) was founded on February 9, 1949, it immediately embraced the values of freedom, fairness and respect for diversity espoused by a United Nations still in its infancy. Over the past seven decades, ACANU has strived to support and protect journalists accredited to the UN in Geneva, pushing for fair and equal access to information, and defending the freedom and prestige of this highly diverse press corps. "Today, at a time when both the media and the international institutions that ACANU members cover face increasing hostility and attack, our association is as important as ever," ACANU President Nina Larson said. "We are determined to continue championing and highlighting the vital role played by a free and vibrant media in covering the work done by the United Nations and other international organisations based in Geneva, and defending UN-accredited journalists' Geneva right to freely access, scrutinise and challenge information provided through the international bodies and by states," she added. To mark its anniversary, ACANU has created a large-scale exhibit* celebrating the work done by journalists from a wide range of countries to highlight, explain and critically assess some of the most important and memorable international events that have taken place in Geneva over the past 70 years. ACANU members have been at the forefront of covering such monumental events as the Geneva conference ending the Indochina war in 1954, Che Guevara’s address before the UN Conference on Trade and development in 1964, the Geneva Summit between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev in 1985 effectively ending the Cold War, as well as peace conferences to end the Iran-Iraq war, the Yugoslavia conflict, Iraq's occupation of Kuwait, and more recently the peace talks for Syria, Cyprus, Yemen and Libya, not to mention the Iran nuclear talks. Our members have also been there as witnesses to visits by such personalities as Nelson Mandela, Yassir Arafat, Bill Clinton and Aung San Suu Kyi, and three popes. The exhibit featuring photographs of these events and others, along with archival documents and communications equipment showing the evolution of our profession, will open on February 18 in the Salle des Pas Perdus at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, and will run through February 28. As part of ACANU's anniversary celebrations, the association has also created two new international journalism awards: The ACANU Prize for Excellence in Reporting and the ACANU Prize for Reporting on Human Rights Issues. These awards are meant to honour outstanding reporting on the international organisations based in Geneva, including on refugees, migration, health, labour and global trade, as well as on human rights. An independent, international jury (https://acanu.ch/the-jury) has designated the winners, whose names will be announced ahead of the awards ceremony**, which will take place at the Maison de La Paix on Monday, February 25, at 7:00 pm. The Philippines government will try to reassure the UN of its commitment to respect, protect, and fulfill its human rights obligations about cases of enforced and involuntary disappearances that took place in the country from 1975 to 2012.
